the control switch

"At first, all goes well, but after two or three months a pattern begins to emerge, and Grace understands that she’s trapped in a machine. Trause wants her and he doesn’t want her. He knows he should give her up, but he can’t give her up. He vanishes and reappears, withdraws and comes back, and each time he calls for her, she goes flying into his arms. He loves her for a day or a week or a month, and then his doubts return and he withdraws again. The machine goes off and on, off and on… and Grace isn’t allowed near the control switch. There’s nothing she can do to change the pattern."

auster [outra vez]

Como o magistral “The Brooklyn Follies”:

“Yes, I suppose you could. And you’d wind up regretting it every day for the rest of your life. Don’t go there Joyce. Try to roll with the punches. Keep your chin up. Don’t take any wooden nickels. Vote Democrat in every election. Ride your bike in the park. Dream about my perfect, golden body. Take your vitamins. Drink eight glasses of water a day. Pull for the Mets. Watch a lot of movies. Don’t work too hard at your job. Take a trip to Paris with me. Come to the hospital when Rachel has her baby and hold my grandchild in your arms. Brush your teeth after every meal. Don’t cross the street on the red light. Defend the little guy. Stick up for yourself. Remember how beautiful you are. Remember how much I love you. Drink one Scotch on the rocks every day. Breathe deeply. Keep your eyes open. Stay away from fatty foods. Sleep the sleep of the just. Remember how much I love you.”

Smoke*

Auggie: If you can't share your secrets with your friends then what kind of friend are you?
Paul: Exactly... life just wouldn't be worth living.
Smoke, Wayne Wang/Paul Auster (1995)

Work in progress', tal como a vida.

Auggie: Just come to me. Ity’s my corner after all. I mean, it’s just one little part of the world, but things take place there, too, just like everywhere else. It’s a record of my little spot.
Paul: It’s kind of overwhelming.
Auggie: You’ll never get it if you don’t slow down, my friend.
Paul: What do you mean?
Auggie: I mean, you’re going too fast. You’re hardly even lookin’ at the pictures.
Paul: But... they’re all the same.
Agguie: They’re all the same, but each one is different from every other one. You got your bright mornings and your dark mornings. You got you summer light and you your autumn light. You got your weekdays and your weekends. You got your people in overcoats and galoshes… and you got your people in t-shirts and shorts. Sometimes the same people, same time different ones. Sometimes the different ones become the some and the same ones disappear. The Earth revolves around the sun, and every day, the light from the sun hits the Earth at a different angle.
Paul: Slow down, huh?
Auggie: That’s what I’d recommend. You know how it is. “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow… time creeps on its petty pace.”

The Brooklyn Follies

Breathe deeply. Keep your eyes open. Stay away from fatty foods. Sleep the sleep of the just. Remember how much I love you.”

Esta – juntamente com a frase de abertura [“I was looking for a quiet place to die. Someone recommended Brooklyn…”] – foi eleita, por unanimidade, a melhor passagem do “The Brooklyn Follies”.

Ainda o Auster

Auggie: If you can't share your secrets with your friends then what kind of friend are you?
Paul Benjamin: Exactly... life just wouldn't be worth living.
Smoke, Paul Auster (1995)

* Em versão recusar-qualquer-convite-para-esta-noite-e-ficar-acordada-até-tarde.

Mr. Vertigo, Paul Auster
